Counting with intent

Limits are everywhere: tweets, SMS, meta descriptions, essay assignments, abstract submissions. Characters with and without spaces are both shown because different systems count differently. Reading time helps you size an article for its audience, and the frequency list is a quick way to spot an overused word.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

At 200 words per minute for silent reading, and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud. These are typical averages; technical text takes longer.

How are words counted?

Anything separated by whitespace counts as a word, so "well-known" is one word and "e.g." is one word.

What is a good length for a blog post or meta description?

Meta descriptions work best around 150 to 160 characters, and titles under about 60. Long-form posts that rank well are often 1,000 to 2,000 words, but quality beats length.

Is my text stored?

No. Counting happens in your browser as you type, and nothing is sent anywhere.
