Slugs

URLs people (and search engines) like

A clear slug tells a visitor where a link goes before they click it and gives search engines a relevant keyword. Keep it to a handful of words, lowercase, with no dates unless the page is time-bound.

Frequently asked questions

What is a slug?

The readable part of a URL that identifies a page, like quartz-cron-every-15-minutes. Good slugs are short, lowercase, and use hyphens between words.

Hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator, but treat an underscore as part of a word.

How are accents and symbols handled?

Accented letters lose their accent (cafรฉ becomes cafe), Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated, an ampersand becomes "and", and any other symbol turns into a separator.

What happens with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Hindi titles?

There is no safe ASCII spelling without a dictionary (for example pinyin), so this tool does not guess. By default a title written only in such a script becomes u- followed by the hex code points of its first characters (ๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž becomes u-65e5-672c-8a9e), so the slug is never empty. Tick "Keep non-Latin letters" to keep the original characters instead; browsers show them as written and send them percent-encoded.

Should I include stop words like "the" or "and"?

You can drop them to keep slugs short, but keeping them is harmless. Avoid changing a slug after publishing, or add a redirect.
