Tables without counting pipes

Markdown tables are readable when they are neatly aligned and miserable to edit by hand: add one long value and every row needs re-padding. Spreadsheets, on the other hand, make tabular data easy. This tool bridges the two: paste data from a spreadsheet, a CSV export or an existing Markdown table, choose the alignment of each column and copy a perfectly aligned table.

The first row is treated as the header. Pick left, centre or right alignment per column (numbers usually read best right-aligned), and choose whether to pad the cells so the table is aligned in plain text, or leave them compact. Pipes inside cells are escaped, line breaks become <br> and rows with missing cells are filled in. You can also convert the result back to CSV, which is handy for cleaning up a table and loading it into a spreadsheet.

Tips

Everything runs in your browser; your data is not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a table in Markdown?

Put cells between pipes, add a header row, then a separator row of dashes: | a | b | and | --- | --- |. Colons in the separator set alignment: :-- left, :-: centre, --: right.

What can I paste in?

CSV, semicolon-separated, tab-separated data (for example copied from a spreadsheet) or an existing Markdown table that you want to tidy and align. Quoted CSV fields with commas and quotes are handled.

How do I put a pipe character inside a cell?

Escape it with a backslash: \|. The generator does this for you.

Do all Markdown renderers support tables?

Tables are part of GitHub Flavored Markdown and are supported by GitHub, GitLab, most documentation tools and the previewer on this site. The original Markdown specification has no tables.
